Analyzing Syntactic Structure

چکیده
For analyzing the structure of a sentence we will use constituent analysis, a hierarchical model introduced by Chomsky [1]. In this framework, sentences are modeled in the form of a parse tree (see Figure 1), where leaves are lexical items, or terminals, and internal nodes are constituent labels. The constituent labels form grammatical types from the lexical items, and lexical items form the sentence. For example, the first level of the tree in Figure 1 tells us that the analyzed sentence S is made out of a noun phrase NP and a verb phrase VP. To see this more clearly, let us introduce the following, more compact, notation: [[Police] NP [put barricades around Upson] V P ] S

متن کاملA Preliminary Evaluation of the Impact of Syntactic Structure in Semantic Textual Similarity and Semantic Relatedness Tasks
The well related tasks of evaluating the Semantic Textual Similarity and Semantic Relatedness have been under a special attention in NLP community. Many different approaches have been proposed, implemented and evaluated at different levels, such as lexical similarity, word/string/POS tags overlapping, semantic modeling (LSA, LDA), etc. However, at the level of syntactic structure, it is not cle...
متن کاملSyntactic Complexity of Russian Unified State Exam Texts in English: A Study on Reliability and Validity
In this study we analyze texts used in Russian Unified State Exam on English language. Texts that formed small research corpora were retrieved from 2 resources: official USE database as a reference point, and popular website used by pupils for USE training “Neznaika” (https://neznaika.pro/). The size of two corpora is balanced: USE has 11934 tokens and “Neznaika” - 11918 tokens. We share Biber’...
متن کاملSyntactic Structures in Research Article Titles from Three Different Disciplines: Applied Linguistics, Civil Engineering, and Dentistry
Deducing what a paper is about, titles are considered as the most important determinant of how many people will read the article. Therefore, studying the use of different syntactic structures and their rhetorical functions in titles is of great significance. The current study was set to investigate these structures used in research article titles in three disciplines of Applied Linguistics, Den...
متن کاملNatural Language Multitasking: Analyzing and Improving Syntactic Saliency of Hidden Representations
We train multi-task autoencoders on linguistic tasks and analyze the learned hidden sentence representations. The representations change significantly when translation and part-of-speech decoders are added. The more decoders a model employs, the better it clusters sentences according to their syntactic similarity, as the representation space becomes less entangled. We explore the structure of t...

A research article (RA) title is the first and foremost feature that attracts the reader's attention, the feature from which she/he may decide whether the whole article is worth reading. The present study attempted to investigate syntactic structures and rhetorical functions of RA titles written in English and Persian and published in journals in three disciplines of Electrical Engineering, Psy...
